Port Edgar Yacht Club has today approximately 400 members, who own between them more than 100 yachts and just less than 100 dinghies.
Membership and yacht racing starts has fallen slightly each year since a peak in 2002. In line with trends across the country, support for regattas/open meetings has also fallen away steadily over the same time period.
Dinghy starts at club races has fallen more markedly, down since its peak in 1999 by about half, although Monday evening racing can sometimes show a healthy, 20 boat turnout.
Port Edgar Marina, accommodates almost 300 boats afloat, most of which are yachts, and a further 150 dinghies and other small craft ashore. It also hosts a sailing school, which provides training throughout the year - to all ages and all levels of competence - on a wide range of seamanship skills.
- As a marina, Port Edgar enjoys many natural advantages, including;
- a dramatic setting, positioned as it is alongside two spectacular bridges,
- sailing waters that offer shelter, challenge and variety
- all-weather access,
- all tide access (for all but the deepest draught leisure vessels)
- ´round the compass` access by road
- A location close to the main population centres
- the only proper/sizeable marina on the east coast of Scotland
Site re-development
Despite these many natural advantages, developing the marina has not been without its difficulties. A new attempt to deliver a significant, site wide redevelopment is currently in play.
See below for our view as to its chances of being successful.
Club finances
As long as we are not required to meet any exceptional costs, our annual income broadly covers our annual expenditure.
After spending £20,000 on the Club work boat and £12,000 on two 707’s, we will still have, in round numbers, £102,000 in our ´savings´, account and £12,000 in our operating account.
Our annual individual membership subscriptions, at £75 per member, are as low as any sailing club in the region.
