For the third year running, the Edinburgh 707 Cup was hosted by Port Edgar Yacht Club in great sailing conditions, a pretty steady 15-20 knots Easterly wind and some sunshine! Moved up river to avoid the Easterly swell, twelve Hunter 707s competed fiercely and good-naturedly for what has now become an established fixture in the Racing calendar.
Last year’s champion, Cacciatore helmed by John Robertson was narrowly edged off the winner’s rostrum by James Urquhart and crew in Code Z helmed by Andy Marshall who managed three wins out of the five races – only one point separated first and second. Three points further back, Seaword , who despite dumping their helmsman in the water in the first race, secured good results in the last two races and third place overall. Fourth and fifth went to Jetstream, Dave Northridge and Blue Funk, Neil Maclure from the Royal Forth Yacht Club.
Too many incidents to mention and thrills and spills throughout the fleet made for a very successful day for all concerned. With special thanks to the Event organisers, Dara O’Malley, Rachel Alvarado and Karl Saville and particularly to the Race Officer, Paul Deponia and his crew on the Committee Boat who ensured a great day’s racing and a timely return to shore for refreshments and the now legendary BBQ as supplied by Chris.
