In 2016 the RYA and Royal Thames Yacht Club hosted the inaugural British Keelboat Sailing League. A team from PEYC (Callum Calder, Iain Dick, Ramsay Leuchars and Calum Reid) came 3rd and have as a result qualified to enter the 2017 Sailing Champions League Act 1 at St Petersburg Yacht Club on 11th-13th August to race for the opportunity to compete in the finals at Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in Italy in September.
The 2017 British Keelboat Sailing League will produce the British Qualifiers for the 2018 Sailing Champions League. There are a series of regional qualifiers and a final in Cowes in September.
PEYC aim to send a team to the qualifier at either Scarborough (June 18th and 19th) or Helensburgh (April 29th/30th). The current team can be challenged in an intra club match race series by the highest placed all PEYC team competing in the Edinburgh Cup or if no team in this event chooses to become the challenger by a team invited by Steve Gush, the PEYC 707 co-ordinator. If a challenger is found by April 23rd then the intra club match race series will be held sometime in May or early June and the successful team have the opportunity to go to the Scarborough qualifier.
The race team will be providing coaching on Wednesday evenings to skippers and crews that would find it helpful and may on occasion take members out racing on the club 707s. They will also be helping raise funds to help meet the expenses of competing in both the National and European Sailing Leagues. The policy the club is adopting to support this initiative is set out in a paper Supporting PEYC race team for National Sailing League which has been approved by the main committee.
