Cruising

PEYC have a vibrant cruising section and aim to get people out on the water on a weekly basis.  A number of Port Edgar yacht owners get involved in the cruising activity, offering crewing opportunities to non-boat owning members. We take people with all levels of experience, but stress that we are not a formal yacht training school. Yacht cruising is a sociable activity, and the weekly Club sessions are a great way for members to experience different types of sailing boat and meet new people. We have set out our principles in more detail in our Cruising Charter.

The cruising group sails regularly on a Thursday and arranges cruising in company on a monthly basis at weekends. Some of the yacht skippers also post on the cruising group looking for crew offering further chances to get out on the water.

Cruising section communication takes place via the cruising Google group and if you want to be involved then it is important to be a member of this group.  Simply send an email from the address you would like to use to:

peyc_cruisers+subscribe@googlegroups.com

Crew allocation will initially use the Google sheet system which we evolved last year, however, as the season progresses we plan to integrate it into the new club website booking system.,.

Thursday sailing sessions:

Our season kicks off with a social at the Clubhouse on Thursday 25th April from 6-9pm.

Thursday evening sessions will start on 2nd May and we meet at the new PEYC Clubhouse at 6pm. Due to tides (insufficient water for an evening sail) there will be afternoon sails when we cannot get in/out around the 6pm start time.

To get involved an email is sent out to the PEYC cruising Google group on a Monday.  This will invite you to enter your name in a Google sheet if you want to sail that week.  Later in the week the organiser will check how many yachts are available and allocate crew to boats. Crew will usually know in advance on which boat they will be sailing.  The aim is to mix experienced crew with new sailors.

Please note that all Thursday sessions depend on skipper / boat availability. Paid up PEYC members will be given priority. It is up to each skipper on the day to make a judgement regarding wind strength and weather conditions. Should there be a cancellation at the last minute, we will make every effort to inform crew.

Weekend cruises

The PEYC cruising section visit neighbouring harbours and hold an organised monthly cruise in company. Skills need for these are more than the Thursday sessions and may involve pilotage (getting into a harbour safely), mooring or anchoring, and navigating up and down the Forth.

This year we will be holding cruising in company on the following dates:

Sunday 19th May.

Sunday 23rd June.

Sunday 21st July.

Sunday 19th August.

Sunday 15th September.

While there is no central crew allocation for these sessions, we will always try and place new members if there is capacity on participating yachts.
