Kelpies Cup

Published 11:45am on 14 Jul 2025

The 2025 Kelpies Cup Race and Three Bridges Cruise Muster was held at Port Edgar on July 12th. Weather conditions were "interesting" with a dense haar  covering the river. However early starters on the cruise soon reported clear blue skies further west and racers and cruisers alike disappeared into the mist; the racers to turn around the  club boat "Beamer" about 6 miles upriver and the cruisers  heading a little further to view the restored pier at Culross .

The racers departed at staggered time intervals between 14:45 and 15:30 with the slower boats going first the intention being that they all turned at about high tide.  As soon as they had departed the RO started the day's dinghy racing and with a fortunate bit of timing was able to  get the last race in  that series under way just 40 seconds before the first yacht (Mojito)  took line honours.

The CruiseThe Race
Twenty boats from a variety of Forth Yacht Clubs signed up to cruise as part of the Kelpie Cup event, a fantastic level of interest. Participants readied their boats in eager anticipant of a lovely sail upriver to Culross, to be greeted by a classic east coast haar rolling up the Firth of Forth. Undeterred, the fleet headed out of the marina with many participants taking time to see how the haar developed.   It was an eerie sight, as the race fleet headed out into the fog accompanied by the deep boom of a ships foghorn somewhere unseen in the channel. Cruising boats soon followed, as the fog started to clear, and wind built from the east to make the passage towards Culross a joy to sail.   A few intrepid boats made it all the way, with chopping conditions adding to the fun of berthing on the newly cleared Culross pier. A great day out on the water, with variable conditions to make it interesting. Text to Follow
